As Gays Leave South Beach - Gay Fort Lauderdale Continues to Grow

I really view that as a turning point for South Beach. Within a couple years that followed, South Beach was changing. And not in a good way.

I was last there in 2004 for the famous Winter Party, which attracts several thousand gay people. Even with that many gays in town, my partner and I DID NOT feel safe walking the streets at night. Straight kids in cars drove past and yelled "faggots" at us and one car even hurled a bottle at us. We walked in somewhere for a slice of pizza late night and straight teenagers mumbled "gay this" and "fag that" under their breath, but loud enough to hear.

We were told by locals at that time, that many gays are starting to relocate to Fort Lauderdale.

I have not been back to South Beach since.

It has just gotten worse in the last 5 years as the area has become a late night drinking straight town. This month in the news, gay bashings are on the rise there. State of Florida records stated that 75% of the anti-homosexual hate crimes in Miami-Dade County in 2009 occurred in South Beach/Miami Beach. It's still chic and expensive there. Major developers have invested billions there. But the gays are getting out.

"South Beach isn't the free-spirited haven of gayness it once was." says writer Natalie O'Neill from Miami New Times.

Fort Lauderdale continues to reign supreme as one of the most popular gay destinations in North America. Lauderdale has been a haven for gay and lesbian travelers for decades. But in the last 5 years, it has seen tremendous growth as South Beach shifted. In addition to being a very gay friendly city , Fort Lauderdale has more than 100 gay-owned establishments including hotels/guesthouses, bars, clubs and restaurants, plus the second largest Metropolitan Community Church congregation in the United States and three gay and lesbian publications. Gay Ft. Lauderdale has three popular gay beach areas on Fort Lauderdale's 23 miles of wide, sandy beach.

In the late 80's and early 90's Miami was gay, gay, gay! But by the end of the 90's, South Beach had turned straight, straight, straight. As usual, the gays went in, cleaned up an area, and the straights flocked there.

While this boom was happening in Miami, just up the coast, Richard Gray opened the Royal Palms Resort in Fort Lauderdale. 1991 was really the beginning of a little gay resort town, not as crowded or expensive as South Beach. As gays left South Beach, many went to Fort Lauderdale.

Richard sold the resort last year to a couple who were former guests. But he has stayed on in his role promoting gay touism to Fort Lauderale as the gay liaison to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

He deservedly earned a Gay + award from Logo this month. Here’s the official press release from Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. :

These days when Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (GFLCVB) meets with local hospitality industry colleagues, she anticipates questions of welcoming spring breakers back to the destination. To her pleasure, the collective answer continues to be a steadfast “no.”

For more than 20 years, this former South Florida student getaway has hung a philosophical “No Vacancy” sign for the wild and rowdy college crowd and a welcome mat for couples, families, friends on a getaway, international visitors and convention delegates.

Also during that time, gays flocked to Fort Lauderdale. In addition to being gay friendly, Gay Fort Lauderdale has more than 100 gay-owned establishments including hotels/guesthouses, bars, clubs and restaurants, plus the second largest Metropolitan Community Church congregation in the United States and three gay and lesbian publications. Gay Ft. Lauderdale has three popular gay beach areas on Fort Lauderdale's 23 miles of wide, sandy beach.

“Returning to spring break as a quick tourism fix in a tough economy,” said Grossman, who has been at the helm of Broward County’s tourism marketing organization since 1995, “is clearly not the answer.

Our decision to end spring break in 1986 has driven visitor growth from one half million annually to 10.8 million visitors in 2008. It has allowed us to attract a significant investment in hotel, retail and restaurant development and build a first-class airport and convention center. And, a very small part of the visitor mix is about 15,000 students who visit each year in the springtime to enjoy our beaches.”

The big bonanza for Greater Fort Lauderdale is Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. For the first time in all of the years that the Super Bowl has come to South Florida, Greater Fort Lauderdale will host NFL headquarters, as well as the National Media Center. In addition, for the first time in 30 years, the NFL Pro Bowl is moving from Hawaii to South Florida for play on Sunday, January 31, one week prior to Super Bowl. The expected economic impact of these events is $375 million.

I actually met LEVI KREIS when I was in New York City five years ago. We were in a bar having a drink together and he said he was a singer on the brink of signing "something big" but was at not a liberty to talk about it. He could not tell me, for legal reasons, he had just appeared on Donald Trumps Apprentice and had been offered a record deal! But the show had not aired yet.

About 6 weeks later it aired! And Levi Kreis was "discovered" as a singer! (Previously he had done his share of acting). He actually turned down the deal with a label and went out on his own.

Levi Kreis released his debut album "One of the Ones" in 2005 following an appearance on The Apprentice.

Combined with an exlusive CD premiere on XM Radio, the world's introduction to Levi began a firestorm of conversation. Songs from his debut CD have been featured on The Apprentice, Days Of Our Lives, and The Young And The Restless spawning national television appearances and radio rotation.

His sophomore CD released in 2006, "The Gospel According To Levi", garnered more television and film placement and a music video for the single "We're Okay" which held the #1 position for nine weeks on Mtv's Logo network. The artist’s reception is on Saturday, February 7, from 6 to 9pm and includes music, dance, theatre, book signings and vocal performances. Stop the Bigotry: Legalize Gay Marriage For The Whole United States

IN America, we are granted with FREEDOM OF SPEECH. We may not always agree with someone's views, but it is their choice to have their own opinion.

All the drama around Prop 8 in California has escalated, out of control.

A supporter of California's Proposition 8, fed up with what he believed was the gay community's and "liberal media's" refusal to accept the voters' verdict against same-sex marriage, fired off a letter to the editor.

"Please show respect for democracy," he wrote to the San Francisco Chronicle.

What he encountered instead was an utter lack of respect for free speech.

Within hours, the intimidation game was on. Because his real name and city were listed -- a condition for publication of letters to The Chronicle -- opponents of Prop. 8 used Internet search engines to find the letter writer's small business, his Web site (which included the names of his children and dog), his phone number and his clients. And they posted that information in the "Comments" section of SFGate.com -- urging, in ugly language, retribution against the author's business and its identified clients.

We can not intimidate people that don't have the same beliefs as we do! We can try to educate them. And we try to move on, move forward, with positive iniatives. Step around the "haters" and don't spend your energy there.

Papers have already been filed with the Supreme Courts in an attempt to overturn the YES ON 8. And this petition is being circulated by John Smithers, who I met thru the Human Rights Campaign Group on LinkedIn. And it is being sent to the President of the United States, United States House of Representatives, United States Senate. (President elect Obama has already stated he is FOR equal rights for gay couples under a civil partnership act).

So if you are a reader of this blog and support equality for gay people, please take 2 minutes and sign this petition!

If you REALLY want to help, there is second petition to repeal the Defense Against Marriage Act.

If you a blogger - please help spread the word.

While all the circuit boys will down in Miami for Thanksgiving's Annual WHITE PARTY, the Bears, Cubs & Daddies will be spending it in Fort Lauderdale for WOOFFEST!

The Cabanas Guest House and Gay Nudist Resort reports that BearCiti said it will be taking over the production of Wooffest starting this year. Wooffest is a yearly event that was created in 2003 by Joe Soler and friends after the unfortunate passing of his partner to suicide. Joe wanted to create an event where he could raise funds and awareness to support suicide prevention and to help those whose lives have been changed by the loss of a loved one.

Wooffest takes place every year during Thanksgiving weekend in beautiful sunny Fort Lauderdale FL. During the weekend you can catch up with old friends and make new lasting friendships with people from all around the world as we all come together to raise funds for a good cause and remember a portion of all the proceeds from the whole weekend are given to non profit agencies which will benefit suicide prevention.

Perhaps the funniest play ever written by Charles Busch, PSYCHO BEACH PARTY , captures the 50's and 60's. Take a dash of GIDGET, add in Frankie and Annette and a dash of Hitchcock, and you have all the makings for a great gay comedy romp!

Chicklet Forrest, a teenage tomboy, desperately wants to be part of the surf crowd on Malibu Beach in 1962. One thing getting in her way is her unfortunate tendency towards split personalities. Among them is a black check out girl, an elderly radio talk show hostess, a male model named Steve and the accounting firm of Edelman and Edelman. Her most dangerous alter ego is a sexually voracious vixen named Ann Bowman who has nothing less than world domination on her mind.

Add in hunky porn star Matthew Rush and the delightfully delicious Daisy Deadpetals and you have a rocking good time!

The play is directed by Ed Sparan and is presented by The Truck Theatre at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The show runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8 p.m. through Nov. 30.

National Coming Out Day October 11th

National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. It is observed on October 11 by members of the LGBT communities and their supporters.

The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary in 1988, in celebration of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights one year earlier, in which 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, for gay and lesbian equality.

National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

Despite its name, National Coming Out Day (so called because it originated as an event in the United States) is in fact observed in many countries, including Switzerland, Germany Canada and the United Kingdom. As of 2008 The Netherlands also has Coming Out Day on 10-11.
